er Stilmittel (harmonisch und technisch) des Flamencos mit anderen Stilrichtungen. Er wurde in Köln geboren und lebt seit 1986 in Santa Fe (New Mexico). Sein Ensemble heißt Luna Negra (Schwarzer Mond).

2008 war er mit One Guitar für den Grammy in der Kategorie Bestes New-Age-Album nominiert.

2009 ist er mit The Scent of Light erneut für den Grammy in der Kategorie Bestes New-Age-Album nominiert.

GB: Ottmar Liebert (born February 1, 1959) is a German guitarist, songwriter, and producer best known for his Spanish-influenced easy listening music. A five-time Grammy Award nominee, Liebert has received 38 Gold and Platinum certifications in the United States, as well as certifications in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. His debut album Nouveau Flamenco (1990) sold double-platinum in the United States.

Early life

Ottmar Liebert was born February 1, 1959 in Cologne, West Germany to a Chinese-German father and a Hungarian mother. As a child, he spent most of his time traveling throughout Europe and Asia with his family. He began playing classical guitar at 11, and studying flamenco guitar at 14, after he "found a Flamenco LP in the bargain bin at a local supermarket".  After performing rock music in his native Germany, he moved to the United States and settled in Boston for a few years, performing in various rock clubs. In 1986 Liebert settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he began looking to create a new musical sound.

Liebert cites musical influences such as "Carlos Santana, Paco de Lucía, John McLaughlin, Robert Fripp, and Jeff Beck, others were horn players like Miles Davis", although he cites "others yet were fine artists who taught me about space and brush strokes and dynamics and contrast".

Music career

In 1989 Liebert founded the first incarnation of his band Luna Negra (black moon). That year he recorded a self-produced album titled Marita: Shadows and Storms. The initial thousand copies were sold in the gallery of Santa Fe artist Frank Howell. When the record found its way to radio stations and began generating a response among listeners, Higher Octave Music picked it up and released a remastered version titled Nouveau Flamenco (1990). The album eventually sold double-platinum in the United States.

Liebert followed up his debut with several successful albums that continued and expanded his sound, including Borrasca (1991), Solo Para Ti (1992), and The Hours Between Night + Day (1993), all three earning Gold certification. Liebert's international success continued with ¡Viva! (1995) and Opium (1996), both of which earned Platinum status in the United States and Latin America.

Liebert has recorded with Luna Negra since 1989. Personnel in the band have changed regularly since then, with the only constant being bassist Jon Gagan.

Since 1990 Ottmar Liebert has released a total of 25 albums including live releases, Christmas CDs, 15 CDs of original music, a DVD, and various remixes. He has received 38 Gold and Platinum certifications in the USA as well as certifications in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

In 2006, Liebert contributed his song "This Spring Release 10,000 Butterflies" to the album project Artists for Charity - Guitarists 4 the Kids, produced by Slang Productions, to assist World Vision Canada in helping underprivileged kids in need.

Controversy

Ottmar drew heavy criticism with his adoption of the term "Nouveau Flamenco" to describe his music, especially given that none of his works to date had followed Flamenco's forms. It was also perceived by others as a marketing ploy and an attempt to associate his music with the then burgeoning school of "Flamenco Nuevo", where acknowledged Flamenco artists had started to rejuvenate and reinvent Flamenco through the introduction of influences from Latin America (e.g. the Rumba rhythm) and even jazz music. Paco de Lucia, generally held to be the greatest Flamenco guitarist of recent times, and a rare example of a Flamenco artist who is acknowledged both as an instigator of Flamenco Nuevo, and as traditional Flamenco's preeminent practitioner, was one such critic. Despite Liebert citing Paco as an influence, Paco himself was moved to describe Liebert's music as "una degeneración, una caricatura del flamenco" (literally, "a degeneration, a caricature").

As Ottmar explains in an interview from 2004, once he was signed to a record label, he was required to come up with a name for what he was doing. Although there are Flamenco elements to his music, it’s nothing like traditional Flamenco, being based on melody and using much simpler forms. As this music couldn’t be considered jazz, rock, or classical, he felt that Flamenco was the closest word to use that people could identify with. 

Personal life

Since 1986 Liebert has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1992 he purchased an "alt-ranchette" just outside the city, with an adobe guesthouse he built as a recording studio. In May 2006 Liebert was ordained as a Zen monk by Dennis Genpo Merzel at the Kanzeon Zen Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Empezó a tocar guitarra a los 11 años, después estudió guitarra clásica en una escuela de artes. A los 18 años viajó extensivamente a través de Europa y Asia intentando absorber cada tradición musical que encontró.

Empezó su carrera en su nativa Alemania en bandas de rock and roll.

Gran admirador de Miles Davis, Carlos Santana y John McLaughlin, en 1979 se mudó Estados Unidos estableciéndose en Boston, donde trabajó como lavaplatos, cajero de banco y mensajero ciclista durante el día para poder dedicarse por las noches a la música, tocando en varias bandas de jazz-funk hasta 1985.

En 1986 viajaba rumbo a Los Ángeles con la intención de mudarse a allá cuando se detuvo en Santa Fe por un par de semanas para visitar a un amigo. Autodefinido por sus diversas raíces como "perro mestizo" (mutt en inglés), le encantó la mezcla de culturas anglo, india, hispana, mexicana, italiana, francesa y asiática de la ciudad y se estableció ahí.

En Santa Fe empezó a tocar en restaurantes para ganarse la vida.

Estudió guitarra flamenca por solo seis meses y para cuando grabó "Nouveau Flamenco" solo llevaba un año practicando ese estilo.

Su primer álbum empezó en 1989 como una cinta llamada "Marita: Shadows and Storms" producida por el mismo Liebert. El artista Frank Howell distribuyó copias en sus galerías de arte eventualmente una copia llegó a una estación de radio que la programó y empezó a ser solicitada por los radioescuchas. La discográfica Higher Octave Music firmó a Liebert por tres álbumes, el primero de los cuales fue la misma cinta remasterizada y relanzada nacionalmente (en EE.UU.) en 1990 como "Nouveau Flamenco". Este álbum debut ha alcanzado doble disco de platino por sus ventas y es uno de los mejor vendidos álbumes de guitarra, sobre todo por el tema: "Barcelona Nights" reconocido mundialmente.

Después de que su álbum subsecuente "Borrasca" subiera rápidamente las listas, Liebert fue firmado por Epic con los que en 1992 presentó su álbum "Solo Para Ti", con la colaboración de Carlos Santana en dos piezas, incluyendo su clásica "Samba Pa Ti". En 2001 finalizó una década de contrato con Epic con el álbum "Little Wing". Ese mismo año fundó su propio sello disquero SSRI (por Spiral Subwave Records International) con el que publicó en convenio con Higher Octave Music para distribución y venta sus dos álbumes siguientes. Género musical

La música de Ottmar Liebert es difícil de categorizar, lo cual es muy de su agrado. Sin embargo, ha declarado sentirse muy confortable con la etiqueta New Age debido a que es tan abierta y poco definida.

Sus aficionados consideran que Liebert compone, interpreta y graba música en el estilo Nuevo Flamenco, en el que se mezclan elementos de flamenco con Jazz, Bossa nova y otros géneros. No obstante, Liebert ha sido dura y repetidamente criticado por parte de la prensa especializada en flamenco auténtico, así como por los intérpretes apegados al flamenco tradicional y respetuosos de sus formas. La critica se dirige principalmente a la alteración de formas rítmicas y armónicas, a las cuales no se apega Liebert, principalmente por desconocerlas, e incluso llegando a mostrar incapacidad para ejecutarlas, debido a su complejidad. Paco de Lucía, quizás el máximo referente histórico de la guitarra flamenca, ha calificado el nuevo flamenco de Liebert como "una degeneración, una caricatura del flamenco".

También se ha hecho crítica de las habilidades técnicas de Liebert para tocar la guitarra española. La competencia con otros maestros del género flamenco considerados como auténticos virtuosos, ha limitado su entrada a la peninsula ibérica. Sin embargo, ha tenido gran aceptación en el mercado anglosajón. Puede concluirse que más allá de que la música compuesta por Liebert pueda ser considerada como Flamenco o no, las críticas sobre sus composiciones -emitidas por músicos de diversos géneros- recaen especialmente en su elementalidad, pues se ha calificado como poco elaborada, plana y carente de armonizaciones complejas y líneas melódicas interesantes.

En tiendas de discos suele ser ubicado bajo New Age o World Music/España.

Luna Negra

En 1989 fundó su grupo Luna Negra y ha grabado con el desde 1990. Liebert describe a Luna Negra como un "grupo de goma" debido a que cambia con las temporadas, los miembros todo el tiempo entran y salen.

Los únicos miembros constantes son Ottmar Liebert y el bajista Jon Gagan. Algunos músicos que han pasado por sus filas son: Ron Wagner, Canton Becker, Mike Chavez, Calvin Hazen, Mark Clark, Kanoa Kaluhiwa, Mike Middleton, Daniel Ward, James Bobchak, Carl Coletti, Paulo Baldi, Domenico Camardella, Dave Bryant, Jeff Sussmann.
