Weekendblog: Rammstein - Keine Lust, Amerika & Ohne Dich

D: Rammstein ist eine deutsche Rock-Band, die 1994 in Berlin gegründet wurde und musikalisch zur Neuen Deutschen Härtegezählt wird. Ihr Kennzeichen ist ein als „brachial“ beschriebener Musikstil, den die Bandmitglieder selbst „Tanzmetall“ nennen, sowie häufig kontrovers diskutierte Texte. Auch der massive Einsatz von pyrotechnischen Elementen findet häufig mediale Beachtung. Der musikalische Stil der Band wurde unter anderem von der slowenischen Band Laibach beeinflusst. Bis 2009 verkaufte Rammstein über 16 Millionen Tonträger und ist mit deutschsprachigen Texten weltweit unter anderem auch in Ländern wie den USA kommerziell erfolgreich.

Soundcloud - Where Are You Going?


SoundCloud: breaking news for the industry’s favourite rebel

GB:  SoundCloud is one of Berlin’s most famous startups. It has managed to attract around 350 million monthly users, and still maintain an exclusive ‘under-the-radar’ vibe for the many artists who use the platform to share, showcase and remix music. The now famous singer Lorde achieved fame by releasing her hit track Royals for free on SoundCloud, before moving on to sign to a label and reach the top of the charts. 
Other artists have also benefited from SoundCloud’s strong community. DJs and EDM musicians have flourished especially well on SoundCloud, with artists like Alle Farben, Robin Schulz, Bakermat and Niko Pusch achieving thousands of followers! Labels also understand and use the promotional opportunities that SoundCloud offers. Many now curate their own playlists and release exclusive tracks for their followers on the platform.


However, soundcloudSoundCloud has recently announced changes to its service. There are plans to start using advertising in order to be able to pay licencing fees and royalties out to labels and artists. Artists will be able to register for different levels of ‘On SoundCloud’, as a Partner, Pro, or Premier member. Partners can still use the service for free, with an upload limit of 3 hours. Pro members can upload more music and access more advanced features, in the same vein as SoundCloud’s current paying members. Premier members will be paid royalties, but this is only launching in the USA at first. It will cost around 3 dollars per month.

SoundCloud has reportedly emphasised that this move will enable the service to stay free for users, but there have been waves of criticism across the scene as artists feel that they will now be robbed of the unique features that originally attracted them to the platform. Are the labels putting SoundCloud under pressure, or have the SoundCloud bosses decided that it’s not fair on artists to receive no payment for their songs that are being consumed so voraciously?

The labels

The prospective deal between SoundCloud and its new label partners insists that the labels will not sue the startup for previous cases of copyright infringement. This clears SoundCloud’s conscience, so to speak, meaning that they can focus on paying artists, labels and publishers an agreed royalty rate, without worrying about the copyright evasion inherent in their previous, more radical model. According to Bloomberg, however, SoundCloud, Warner Music Group, Sony Music and Universal Music have all declined to comment on the deal, as the details of the still unsigned agreement are unsure. It is suggested the labels will receive a 3-5% stake in SoundCloud as well a portion of the company’s profits in future.

How will this affect artists and producers using the platform?

There has recently been a wave of dissatisfaction from EDM artists like Kaskade, who have received take down notices from SoundCloud due to copyright issues. Although Sony was behind these notices in this case, it has been reported that Universal is a major figure in this kind of action, being able to freely remove content without telling SoundCloud or the artist exactly where their infringement took place. DJs and producers are arguing that their remixes actually help people to discover artists, listen to them in different ways, and potentially buy their music or go to a live show.

Many critics of SoundCloud’s new move are accusing the company of bending to pressure from big labels, fearing lawsuits, and sacrificing the freedom of the artists whose content they originally helped to share. However, perhaps the only reason that SoundCloud has lasted in its current format for song is due to a certain unusual level of tolerance from the labels that understood its marketing purposes and fan benefits.

There are of course other platforms like mixcloud, heartthis and Bandcamp which allow musicians to upload their music for free on non-advertised platforms. These platforms allow unlimited uploads, and might even benefit from having more space to grow as SoundCloud moves towards a more official working model.

The future

SoundCloud investors IVP wrote an interesting post explaining their favourite features of the service. They dub it “the YouTube of audio”, a platform which is a direct equivalent (in terms of power and influence) to the legendary video sharing site. If perceived like this, it seems inevitable that the monetisation process will begin at some stage, as it has with YouTube. It’s unlikely that two of the most popular platforms in the world would continue to be used without any fees being paid to the labels and artists writing, recording and releasing the content. This development could put SoundCloud into a new position in the music industry, moving it away from its previous status in which the usual copyright concerns were mysteriously allowed to slide.


SoundCloud is an extremely popular source for discovering new talent, and this should not be eliminated by ads, unless musicians stop using the platform en masse. Such a drastic response seems unlikely at this stage, in spite of the fears and complaints that have been voiced. Although major labels and artists will receive advertising income in the future, the platform could still be a useful resource for industry professionals and fans to find new artists, perhaps supporting them in future by signing them in the case of the former, or buying their music and going to their gigs in the latter case. 

Either way, the platform will hopefully continue to offer exposure to artists, and keep some of its original innovative power in this area. If SoundCloud proceeds carefully with the ad process, and perhaps even develops a paid subscription model, the results could still develop in a positive direction for artists, users and labels alike.

Es hat das geschafft, wovon viele nur träumen: es zieht jeden Monat rund 350 Millionen Nutzer an und schafft es dennoch einen exklusives ‘under-the-radar’-Image beizubehalten. Das Unternehmen zieht immer noch fleissig KünstlerInnen an, welche auf der Plattform ihre Musik zur Schau stellen, remixen, und teilen. Lorde, die nun mittlerweile in aller Welt bekannt ist, hat ihren Hit ‘Royals’ auf SoundCloud veröffentlicht bevor sie bei einem Label unterzeichnet und die Charts gestürmt hat.  

Andere Künstler haben auch schon von der starken Community von SoundCloud profitiert. DJs und EDM-Musiker sind auf SoundCloud besonders erfolgreich; Künstler wie Alle Farben, Robin Schulz, Bakermat und Niko Pusch erreichen tausende Follower, und auch Labels verstehen die Promo-Möglichkeiten, die SoundCloud zu bieten hat! Viele kurieren heutzutage ihre eigenen Playlists und releasen exklusive Tracks für ihre Follower.



SoundCloud hat vor kurzem Veränderungen an der Plattform angekündigt. Es ist nun geplant, dass Werbung aufgeschaltet wird um den Künstlern und Labels Lizenzgebühren bezahlen zu können. Künstler werden sich für verschiedene Stufen auf ‘On SoundCloud’ anmelden können, nämlich als Partner, Pro, oder Premium Member. Partner können den Service weiterhin gratis benutzen, wobei eine Uploadgrenze von 3 Stunden Audio besteht. 

Pro Members werden mehr Musik hochladen und fortgeschrittene Features nutzen können, etwa im selben Rahmen wie dies heute zahlende Nutzer schon können. Premier Members werden zusätzlich noch Tantiemen ausbezahlt. Letzteres wird aber vorerst                                                         nur in den USA lanciert, und wird etwa 3 Dollar pro Monat kosten.

SoundCloud hat gemäss Berichten mehrfach bestärkt, dass dieser Schritt nötig ist, um den Dienst für die Nutzer gratis zu behalten. Trotzdem gab es starke Kritik aus der ganzen Szene, da Künstler befürchten, dass die Plattform gerade die Reize verlieren wird, welche soviele Nutzer angezogen hat. Steht SoundCloud etwa unter grossem Druck der Labels, oder haben die SoundCloud-Chefs beschlossen, dass es unfair sei, dass KünstlerInnen nicht für ihre Musik bezahlt werden?

Die Labels

Der kommende Deal zwischen SoundCloud und seinen Labelpartnern schreibt vor, dass die Labels das Startup nicht für vergangene Urheberrrechtsverletzungen anklagen werden. Dies reinigt sozusagen das Gewissen von SoundCloud, was heisst dass sie sich auf die Zukunft konzentrieren können, und den Künstlern, Labels, und Verlegern Tantiemen bezahlen, ohne dass sie sich Sorgen machen müssen was sie vorher mit ihrem eher radikalen Geschäftsmodell angestellt haben. Bloomberg zufolge haben aber weder SoundCloud, Warner Music Group, Sony Music, oder Universal Music zu dem Deal Stellung nehmen wollen, da die Details des noch nicht unterschriebenen Vertrages noch unklar sind. Es wird vermutet, dass die Labels 3-5% Anteil an der Firma, sowie Anteile an zukünftigen Einnahmen erhalten werden.

Welchen Einfluss wird das auf Künstler und Produzenten haben, welche die Plattform benutzen?

Neulich gab es eine Welle der Empörung von EDM-Künstlern wie Kaskade, die Takedown-Meldungen wegen Verletzungen des Urheberrechts von SoundCloud erhalten haben. Auch wenn Sony in diesem Fall hinter diesen Meldungen war wurde berichtet, dass Universal auch unter den Hauptakteuren sind, da sie berechtigt sind, Content zu entfernen ohne SoundCloud oder die Künstler zu benachrichtigen wo und wie genau eine Urheberrechtsverletzung vorliegt. DJs und Produzenten argumentieren, dass ihre Mixes vielen Leuten helfen neue Künstler zu entdecken, was die Nutzer dazu bringen könnte an die Konzerte der ursprünglichen MusikerInnen zu gehen oder deren Musik zu kaufen. 
Viele von SoundClouds aktuellen Kritkern befürchten, dass das Berliner Startup unter dem Druck der Majors eingeknickt ist, da sie Rechtsstreiten aus dem Weg gehen wollen und dafür die Freiheit der Künstler opfern, deren Content sie verbreitet haben. Aber vielleicht hat SoundCloud sein aktuelles Format nur so lange halten können, weil die Labels Toleranz zeigten und den Promo-Wert der Plattform sowie den Nutzen für die Fans einsahen.

Natürlich gibt es auch andere Plattformen wie mixcloud, heartthis, und Bandcamp, die es den Musikern erlauben, ihre Musik kostenlos und werbefrei hochzuladen. Diese Plattformen erlauben unlimiterte Uploads und könnten jetzt mehr Platz zum Wachsen haben, da SoundCloud auf ein offizielleres und herkömmlicheres Geschäftsmodell zuschreitet.

Die Zukunft

Die SoundCloud-Investoren IVP haben einen interessanten Artikel geschrieben, die ihre Lieblingsfeatures von SoundCloud zusammenfassen. Sie nennen es „das YouTube des Audio,“ eine Plattform die direkt äquivalent zur legendären Videoseite ist, sowohl in ihrer Mächtigkeit als auch in ihrem Einfluss. Wenn man es so sieht, ist es unausweichlich, dass der Monetarisierungsprozess irgendwann beginnt, so wie es auch bei YouTube der Fall war. 
Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass die zwei populärsten  Plattformen der Welt längerfristig existieren könnten, ohne irgendwann Lizenzgebühren an die Labels und KünstlerInnen zu bezahlen, die den Inhalt schreiben, aufnehmen, und releasen. Diese Entwicklung könnte SoundCloud in eine neue Position in der Musikindustrie versetzen — weg vom vorherigen Status bei dem man ihnen die Üblichen Urheberrechtsverletzungen einfach verzieh.
SoundCloud ist eine extrem beliebte Quelle, um neue Talente zu entdecken, was auch mit der Einführung von Werbeschaltungen erhalten bleiben sollte — ausser natürlich wenn die KünstlerInnen die Plattform in Massen verlassen. Solch eine Reaktion erscheint trotz der starken Kritik zur Zeit unwahrscheinlich. 
Auch wenn in Zukunft Werbung auf der Plattform erscheinen wird, kann SoundCloud doch noch eine wichtige Ressource für Labels bleiben, die neue Künstler unter Vertrag nehmen wollen, und für Fans die die KünstlerInnen auf SoundCloud unterstützen, indem sie an ihre Konzerte gehen. In jedem Fall wird SoundCloud hoffentlich auch künftig den KünstlerInnen ein grosses Publikum verschaffen, und ihre Innovationskraft in diesem Bereich beibehalten. Wenn SoundCloud mit der Einführung von Werbung vorsichtig vorgeht, und vielleicht sogar ein bezahltes Abonnement einführt, könnte das Resultat für alle Beteiligten positiv ausfallen.

Out of Ideas ????


D: “Broken Moments”(Zerbrochene Augenblicke), “Hybrid Feelings” (Hybride Gefühle),”Pieces of Illusions”(Stücke von Illusionen), “Sweet Ambitions”(Süsse Ambitionen) and “Hidden Reasons” (Versteckte Gründe), sind einige meiner Musiltitel. Toll was?
Aber einen Musiktitel zu finden ist manchmal verdammt schwierig. Als Liedermacher kann man ein Stück aus seinem Liedertext benutzen, aber mit Instrumentalmusik wird die Sache schon etwas komplizierter.
Gut, was tun? Zum Glück gibt es Generatoren die mithelfen solche kleinen Probleme zu bewältigen. Unten zeige ich ein paar Links auf.

Mas para encontrar um título para uma música às vezes é danado de difícil. Como compositor de texto, você pode usar uma parte de suas letras de música, mas com música instrumental, a coisa é um pouco mais complicada.
Bem, o que fazer? Felizmente existem geradores que ajudarem com esses pequenos problemas. Abaixo eu indico alguns links.

Ein neues Lied mit dem Titel “Just Like A Gentle Flow”  (Gerade Wie Eine Sanfte Strömung)  für das nichtkomerzielle Album “New Dimension” ist gerade fertig.
Ein ruhiges Chillwave Stück, bei dem hauptsächlich auf das behutsam einfliessen der Akkorde geachtet wurde. Es wurden nur spärlich Effekte eingesetzt und fast keine Melodie.
Technik: DAW: FL Studio 11; VSTs: Sylenth 1 e Sytrus; Frequenz: 128 bpm;
Dauer: 5´38 min.

A quiet Chillwave piece, where I mainly looked for the careful flow of the chords in to each other. There are only sparsely effects used and almost no melody.

Acabei de fazer uma nova canção intitulada "Just Like A Gentle Flow" (Como Um Fluxo Suave), para o álbum não-comercial "New Dimension". Uma tranquila música no estilo Chillwave, onde prestei minha atenção principalmente sobre o cuidadosamente fluxo dos acordes entre si. Existem escassamente efeitos, e a música está quase sem melodia.

There is Music in the Air ?


BR: Trabalhar com música mim parece complicado. Trabalhei um tempo com fotografia. Tirei fotos, publiquei-as, as-vendi e fiz inúmeras exposições nacionais e internacionais. Ninguém jámais duvidou que as fotos fossen de minha autoria. Bem, na música parece tudo complicado. No mínimo para mim, talvez mudo minha ideia mais tarde. Ainda estou em dúvida se eu aceito essa bagunça toda, registros, direitos autorais, barcodes, números de ISRCs blablabla....
Bem, preciso me informar melhor e ver a origem e a intensão de tudo isso. Por enquanto, tento facilitar um pouco a vida dos músicos. Como eu sou um Sem-fronteira, eu fuço em todos os cantos para soluções, alternativas, exemplos etc.


D:  die komplizierteste Sache, so scheint mir, ist mit Musik zu arbeiten. Ich versuchte mich eine geraume Zeit mit der Fotografie. Ich schoss Fotos, veröffentlichte und verkaufte sie und machte zahlreiche nationale und internationale Ausstellungen. Niemand hatte je daran gezweifelt, dass die Fotos nicht meiner Urheberschaft waren. Nun, es scheint bei der Musik ist alles kompliziert. Zumindest für mich, meine Meinung ändernt sich vielleicht später . Zur Zeit bin ich immer noch nicht sicher, ob ich dieses ganze Durcheinander akzeptiere, Anmeldungen, Urheberrechte, Barcodes, ISRC Nummern,blablabla ....
Nun, ich muss mich besser informieren, um die Herkunft und Absicht des Ganzen zu sehen. Vorläufig versuchen ich das Leben der Musiker etwas zu erleichtern. Da ich ein Grenzenloser bin, schnüffel ich in vielen Ecke und Kanten nach Lösungen, Alternativen, Beispielen usw.

I took pictures, published them, sold them and made numerous national and international exhibitions. Nobody never doubted that the photos are not of my authorship. Well, in the world of music seems all very complicated. At least for me, maybe I´ll change my opinion later. I'm still unsure to accepts all this mess, Registrations, copyrights, barcodes,  ISRCs numbers blablabla ....
Well, I need first to get some better information, to see and understand the origin and intent of all this. For now, I try to facilitate a little the lives of the musicians. As I am a "Borderless, I snoop around in every corner for solutions, alternatives, examples etc.

Promotion Music

Estes músicas são provavelmente para promover Scrambled Eggs. A primeira parte é "Guitar Staff" (Rock), a segunda parte "Nonsense" (Electronic). Na última criei a maioria dos sons com o sintetizador Sylenth 1. com exceção da bateria e dos vocais.

Diese Lieder werden wahrscheinlich dazu benutzt, um Scrambled Eggs Music zu promovieren. Der erste Teil ist "Guitar Staff" (Rock), der zweite Teil ist "Nonsense" (Elektronic). Bei dem letzteren Lied habe ich alle Töne mit dem Synthesizers Sylenth 1 selbst produziert, außer den Trommeln und dem Gesang.

These songs are likely to promote Scrambled Eggs Music. The first part is "Guitar Staff" (Rock), the second part is "Nonsense" (Electronic). At last I created all the sounds with the synthesizer Sylenth 1, except for the drums and vocals.
